A New Old-Fashioned Coming of Age

My partner, Rachel and I have decided that we want to make our film opening a retro, 90’s, summer,
romance, coming of age story. We want our film to be character driven, revolving around a strong,
relatable, female character that wants nothing more than to leave her small close minded town.
A coming of age movie is defined as, a film that focuses on the growth and development of a teenage
protagonist as they transition from childhood to adulthood; working with this genre will give us an advantage
in finding actors as well as coming up with a plot that is relatable and attainable since Rachel and I are at
the age (16/17) in which the protagonists of coming of age movies are generally in. There are quite a few
iconic tropes that are associated with this genre of film, some that I would like to include or allude to in
our film opening are: the protagonist wanting to leave their small town, identity crisis, and teenage rebellion.
Another aspect that will be important is all the audio related content, I would like for our film to be set in
or around the 90’s so having a strong soundtrack that will evoke nostalgia in an older audience will allow
the film to reach a wider target audience. The other aspect of sound that we have considered incorporating is
a voice over, that will let the audience feel a more personal connection to the protagonist, we aren’t quite sure
yet if we want this for our film opening but it is definitely something we will be discussing soon.
There are a few films (and TV shows)  that I absolutely love and are what led me to decide going down
this path of teen drama. The first one is “Heathers” (1988)  and although we probably won’t be going down
the morbid direction that this film takes, we will be drawing inspiration from the film for characterization and
setting. Another film is “LadyBird” (2017) this film is a perfect example of a recent coming of age movie that
evokes nostalgia through the concepts, setting, soundtrack, costume, and makeup design; it doesn't hurt that this
film also encompasses the ideas of teenage rebellion and wanting to leave your small town. Finally I want to
discuss a TV show, “Everything Sucks” (2018) is a Netflix show that was cancelled after just one season which
is such a bummer ! This show created such relatable characters and storylines to depict the concept of a fleeting
childhood and did it with an amazing diverse cast and period costume and makeup design. All of these pieces are
going to help us in creating our own brand new story and I cannot wait to start this journey.
